Marina Faust Exhibition THE ARCHIVE BOX
Born in Vienna in 1950, Marina Faust is a photographer and artist based in Paris and Vienna. Also with experiences of working as a photo reporter, Faust had held her first exhibition in Paris in the 1980s. Currently engaged in a diverse array of creative practices in addition to photography such as the production of video, objects, and collage, Faust is the only photographer to have worked with Maison Martin Margiela from 1990 to 2008.
Seeking a new way to present the archive photographs she had taken throughout her nearly 20-years collaboration with Martin Margiela, a limited edition box each containing a unique selection of images titled “THE ARCHIVE BOX” was launched in the spring 2017 at a gallery in Vienna. Having long-expressed much appreciation for Faust’s works and with a mutual desire to communicate the essence of Martin Margiela’s creations to the next generation, LAILA TOKIO produced a coedited version of the box titled “THE ARCHIVE BOX –Japan Edition for LAILA,” which was presented at a specially organized exhibition.

Ever since encountering Maison Martin Magiela’s show for the first time in 1990, Faust came to engage with the world of their creations over the course of numerous occasions. As the only individual at the time allowed to access and document the backstage of their shows, she was involved in experimental sessions held in in fitting rooms and show rooms, as well as magazine shoots where from time to time she had also been responsible for the overall direction. Reflecting back on this period she states, “To me, Martin Margiela was a strong source of inspiration. The backstage was a part of the magical assemblage that he created, and was a theme that I most enjoyed photographing. It is about transforming complex circumstances and things that overlap in a state of vague uncertainty into remarkable frescos.”
“THE ARCHIVE BOX –Japan Edition for LAILA” has been created under six different types: “Artisnal,” “Objects,” “Oversized collection,” “Flat garment collection,” and “Backstage,” which each feature a series of photographs jointly selected through “a current perspective” by Faust and LAILA from among the extensive archive developed through her collaboration with Martin Margiela. With the concept of the box being to present the archive photographs in an appropriate format, the series of selected photographs are stored in a box that serves as frame when opened, enabling the photographs to be propped up against the wall and changed accordingly. The photographs are printed on silk paper through inkjet print, and including their boxes, have each individually been created by Faust herself.
